Respected in English football, the blue-collar North London neighbourhood is home to Tottenham Hotspur Football Club.
Over the course of its men’s first team’s existence, Tottenham Hotspur has amassed an impressive total of 28 trophies and important honours, representing its triumphs in both domestic and European soccer.
This is derived from the prizes received in these several contests:
. Two Premier League or First Division Championships
. Two titles in the second division or championship
. No less than eight FA Cups
. Four championships in football
. 7 Community and Charity Shields from FA
. 1 Charity Shield from the Sheriff of London
. 2 UEFA Europa League trophy cases
. One Cup Winners’ Cup in Europe
. One cup for the Anglo-Italian League
On the other hand, the Spurs have won 17 more awards from other past contests, such as:
. 1st Southern League Contest

Since its founding in 1899, Tottenham has won a total of 45 trophies and honours in the sport of football. Friendly competitions have also produced a plethora of other results, but I will not be discussing them here.
The history of Tottenham Hotspur’s significant tournament achievements and their impact on the club’s reputation in English football are explored further in this article.
Cups played domestically
Several of the Lilywhites’ victories have come in English competitions; let’s examine each one in detail.
. Premier League Championships in the First Division
. Two victories from a long time ago characterised Tottenham Hotspur’s First Division/Premier League journey:
The years 1950–1951, 1960–1961, and 1962
Remarkably, Spurs’ first foray into the major limelight occurred during the 1950–51 season, after their promotion from the Second Divison the previous year.
Their four-point victory against Manchester United propelled the club into the national limelight as an English powerhouse.
The hiring of Arthur Rowe as manager in 1949 was a major factor in their success, as he guided them to promotion and the First Division championship.
Ten years later, in 1960–1961, White Hart Lane tasted victory once more when the team won the First Divison and the FA Cup in the same season, completing the ‘Double.’
With Wednesday’s 2-1 win, they now have an eight-point advantage over The Owls and can confidently capture the championship.
In this instance, Spurs supporters may look to manager Bill Nicholson as a source of pride and gratitude for the golden years, during which the club accomplished its most remarkable feats. Dave Mackay and Jimmy Greaves were two of the many notable British players he signed to the club.
Championship Titles in the Second Division
On two separate occasions, Tottenham Hotspur have won the Second Division championship and gained promotion back to the First Division.
The club’s winning seasons in this tournament are as follows:
1920–21 1949–50
With 70 points at the conclusion of the 1919–20 season, Tottenham proved they belonged in the top division of English football by dominating the Second Division and scoring over 100 goals.
Under Rowe’s leadership, the team made an impressive comeback to the top First Division in 1949–50.
The team’s dominance and 9-point lead at season’s conclusion were both aided by his introduction of the “push-and-run” playstyle, which was reminiscent of current tiki-taka.
The FA Cup
With eight FA Cup victories under their belt, Tottenham Hotspur can rightfully claim it as one of their most illustrious tournament accomplishments.
The following years’ winners and the teams they beat to get there:
Defeated Sheffield United 3-1 in 1900–01.
defeated Wolverhampton Wanderers 1-0 in 1920–21,
Defence of Leicester City in 1960–61 2-0
1961–62—a 3–1 loss at Burnley
1966–67—lost 2-1 to Chelsea
1980–81 season—3-2 loss against Manchester City
1981–82: lost 1-0 to Queens Park Rangers 1990–91: won 2-1 in overtime against Nottingham Forest
When Spurs beat Sheffield United in a replay in the 1900–01 season, they were the first team to win the FA Cup in the new century.
Twenty years later, in 1920–21, the club finally won the cup again. After that, there was a 40-year gap until the 1960–61 season, when the club made a tremendous effort and won the ‘Double,’ the first of the twentieth century.
Fans won’t have to wait long, however, since in 1961–62, their club won it again with a 3–1 triumph against Burnley.
After a first-round tie in both the 1980–81 and 1981–82 seasons, the team’s cohesion was on full display as they won the cup in consecutive years.
Fans of Tottenham Hotspur are keeping their fingers crossed for a revival in the contemporary game, given the club’s cup history of success.
Competition Final
With four League Cup (or Carabao Cup) victories under their belt, Tottenham Hotspur has shown time and time again that they are a formidable opponent.
This is a list of the club’s championship years and the opponents they faced in the final:
2-0 victory against Aston Villa in 1970–71
1972–73 season—lost to Norwich City 1-0
1998–99—1-0 victory against Leicester City
Defeated Chelsea 2-1 in 2007–08.
When Tottenham beat Aston Villa in the 1970–71 League Cup final at Wembley Stadium, it was their first League Cup win.
The Londoners’ robust and expanding popularity was maintained with another cup success in the ’72/73 season.
In the 1998–99 season, the cup was reclaimed from Leicester City by a thrilling last-minute goal by Allen Nielsen.
In the 2007–08 season, Tottenham won their most recent cup after a late goal by Jonathan Woodgate helped them defeat a tough Chelsea squad. Despite all the odds being against them, the club proved their strength.
The supporters of Tottenham Hotspur have reason to believe that the team will soon be winning cups again, thanks to their League Cup successes.
Association Football Charity Shield
With seven FA Charity Shield/FA Community Shield victories under their belt, Tottenham Hotspur has enjoyed a good run in the tournament.
Here are the teams that Tottenham defeated to win the shield in each of these years:
In 1921—lost to Burnley 2-0 in 1951—lost to Newcastle United 2-1 in 1961—lost to FA XI 3-2 in 1961
1962—lost 5-1 to Ipswich Town 1967—drew 3-3 with Manchester United and split the points in 1981—shared with Aston Villa after a scoreless draw
1991—co-shared with Arsenal after a scoreless tie
Spurs’ early promise was on full show in their 1921 FA Charity Shield victory against Burnley, which they won by a strong 2-0 score.
Looking forward to 1961, Spurs’ 3-2 triumph at White Hart Lane versus the FA’s XI won the Shield. The club had previously won the Double in the 1960–61 season, therefore this title came during a very successful time.
In 1962, Tottenham thrashed Ipswich Town by a score of four goals to nil.
Just a few years down the road, Manchester United and another side played to a 3-3 tie in the Community Shield final, resulting in a shared trophy for the two clubs.
Even though it’s been a long time since the Spurs won the Shield, they’re still a formidable opponent in this preseason event, which gives them a chance to shake off any rust.
London Charity Shield for the Sheriff
The top English professional and amateur teams would compete annually in a renowned tournament, and Tottenham Hotspur was the only team to ever win:
Define Corinthians 5:2 in 1917.
Even while most people just saw the sport as a pastime back then, the competition brought in money and increased interest.
Even though Spurs lost badly to Corinthians in1902, the amateur team still managed to win the tournament a record three times until it was eliminated in 1907.
Attempts at reviving the Shield include included fundraising competitions, which aim to attract attention to amateur teams in need of financing from top-tier English clubs.
Championships on a global scale
Tottenham have seen some success on other lands as they have expanded across the continent to the eyes of the prizes in Europe.
European Cup and Europa League Finals
In the Europa League, Tottenham Hotspur has been victorious not once, but twice.
Throughout these years, they emerged triumphant:
In 1971–72, they lost to Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-2 overall.
1983–84—Semi-Final: 4–3 on penalties after 2-2 in the regular season
The 1971–72 success against Wolverhampton Wanderers was especially memorable since it coincided with the first year of the UEFA Cup. Spurs won the match 3-2 on aggregate.
This trophy adds to the club’s collection from its heyday, when they were unstoppable forces in England and beyond.
After a 2-2 aggregate draw with Anderlecht in the 1983–84 season, Tottenham advanced to a second two-legged final, this time forced to go to penalties. They won the UEFA Cup for a second time thanks to a tenacious 4-3 shootout win.
Tottenham Hotspur are the most prolific club from the United Kingdom to have competed in the UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League.
Finalist in the UEFA Cup
The UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup was won by Tottenham Hotspur once:
Defeat of Atlético Madrid 5-1 in 1962–63
The UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup was an event that brought together European domestic cup winners in a knockout style; England had the most championships with 8, and they currently hold that position.
In the 1962–63 season, Tottenham Hotspur won the league championship with a comprehensive thrashing.
In the championship match, Atlético Madrid took on Spurs at Feijenoord Stadion in Rotterdam, Netherlands.
With a 5-1 victory against Real Madrid, Tottenham added to their increasing collection of domestic and European trophies from the 1960s and 1970s.
Impressively, Tottenham Hotspur advanced to the final after winning the first-round “Battle of Britain” 8-4 on aggregate against Glasgow Rangers.
While advancing to the cup, they would defeat Slovan Bratislava (6-2) and OFK Beograd (5-2) with equally lopsided scores.
They entered the competition with a winning mentality after having won the FA Cup a few months before, and they rode a wave of energy and pinpoint finishing to claim the trophy.
