Tottenham find buyer for disastrous signing, with talks over reduced transfer fee scheduledSpurs may be able to reach an agreement with Genoa over the long-term loan of Djed Spence, but future negotiations regarding the transfer cost may annoy Spurs.
In 2022, Tottenham agreed to a £20 million deal to buy Djed Spence from Middlesbrough. The right-back was returning from an incredible season at Nottingham Forest, wen he was selected for the Championship Team of the Season.
But Spence’s tenure at Spurs never really got off since every manager who came over didn’t think highly of the 23-year-old.
In fact, since relocating to north London, Spence has made just six appearances for Tottenham and has been loaned out three times.

The most recent of those loans occurred in January when Spence joined Genoa, a Serie A team in Italy, to take on a new challenge. There is also a buy option in the loan deal of €10 million (£8.6 million).
Despite making nine appearances for Genoa, including three starts, Spence has not been a surefire starter in Italy. During the assignment, he has mostly been used in his preferred right wing-back position.
Two sources now claim Genoa has seen enough to decide they want to sign Spence on a permanent basis this summer.
Spurs approve the deal; Genoa is open to it
First, Ben Jacobs disclosed that Spurs “intend to sell Spence this summer,” and Marco Ottolini, the sports director of Genoa, was quoted in the reporter’s piece for Caught Offside.

During the same window that Spence moved out, Ottolini managed Radu Dragusin’s trade to the Spurs. The Genoa leader claims that a permanent move is planned.
Ottolini stated, “Every week, I talk with Djed.” “We’ve given him a nice environment.
We’re working to make him feel at home here, and maybe that will show in his on-field performances. We wish to provide him the ideal circumstances for success.
We want to see what he can do in the last seven games. For my part, I think Djed is doing well and is training well.
“We are in discussion with Spurs and will examine a contract over the next several months, allowing us time to grasp both our position and Djed’s perspective on maybe continuing here. Of course, he can do more, and he understands this.”
Spence’s position made public: Genoa wants a lower fee
In a later update, Rudy Galetti stated that Spence is amenable to joining Genoa without any conditions.
Galetti added that Genoa and Tottenham will negotiate a contract shortly, but he also hinted that they would try to come to an agreement on a price lower than the option to acquire (€10 million/£8.6 million).
“Genoa are considering the chance to sign Spence permanently,” the reporter said, taking to X.
“The player — now on loan from Tottenham – is open to stay with [Genoa]. The club wants to reduce the cost of the buy clause, so talks with Tottenham will soon begin.
It is unclear if Tottenham will consent to a price that is less than the pre-agreed option to buy.
However, it is evident that Spurs are able to release a player who doesn’t seem to have much left in north London provided a financial agreement can be reached.
